2011 Toyota Avalon Review

Out-Buick a Buick. That’s the one phrase that comes to mind when discussing Toyota’s flagship, the Avalon. Provide a completely relaxing experience, isolated from all the distractions of your commute. Serene, luxurious, but not flashy. It succeeded so well in capturing that market that Buick is re-launching itself as an American performance brand. Toyota scared them well enough away.

FAST FACTS

1. A 3.5L V6 makes 268-hp and delivers 20/29-mpg (city/hwy).2. The 2011 Avalon gets Toyota’s new brake override system for added safety.
3. Unique in the segment are reclining rear seats.
4. Base models start from $32,595; roughly $4,000 less than a Lexus ES350.

Before considering an Avalon, ask, do I enjoy turning corners vigorously? If yes, walk over to the Buick dealer and invest in a LaCrosse. The long and short is that it’ll be more rewarding to drive. If comfort trumps all, keep reading.

A JAPANESE SEDAN FOR THOSE WHO THINK BIGGER IS BETTER

The Avalon hasn’t changed its course much in its three generations. It's still mechanically based on a stretched Camry platform, with adequate power and loads of space. The current version, which had some minor updates in 2010, continues with that formula.
At nearly 200-inches long and 73-inches wide, the Avalon provides a big body to stuff people and cargo into, although at 14.4 cu. ft. the trunk isn’t as big as you might expect. Should you need space for longer items, however, the 60/40 split-folding rear seat accommodates those needs.
Those dimensions also allow for a large, roomy cabin with stretch-out room for five. The gauges are well organized and clear, and the Avalon has one of Toyota’s more well-laid-out dashboards.

EXTENSIVE STANDARD EQUIPMENT

As you might expect, standard Avalons come with a long list of luxury items like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power-adjustable heated and ventilated leather seats, keyless entry, a nine-speaker audio system, dual-zone climate control and wood-grain trim everywhere. The more expensive Limited gains a power rear sunshade, a JBL audio upgrade, keyless ignition and ventilated front seats. The only real option is a DVD-based touch-screen navigation system.
Mechanically, the Avalon comes in one basic package: a 3.5-liter V6 producing 268-hp and 248 lb-ft of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission sending power to the front wheels. Direct gasoline injection and low-rolling resistance tires help it achieve 20-mpg in the city and 29-mpg on the highway.

QUIET AND COMFORTABLE

Thanks to some serious work with sound-deadening, aerodynamics and soft bushings, the Avalon is quiet as a tomb. Even when the V6 is at full throttle – which chances are will be rarely – it is extremely isolated from the occupants. But make no mistake, the big Toyota moves out of its own way fairly well since it only weighs around 3,600 lbs., which is decent for such a large machine.
Throw it into a turn, though, and you’ll be in for a surprise. The MacPherson strut suspension is tuned very, very soft, and the 17-inch aluminum wheels have relatively tall 55-series tires designed more for noise reduction and long life than corner-carving. That the steering has virtually no feel and the power-assist is overboosted comes as no surprise either. The brakes are surprisingly good, though, with standard ABS, stability and traction control to help when needed. Should the worst happen, the Avalon has seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag, to help cushion the blow.
Avalon pricing starts at $32,595, while the Limited rings in at $35,835. That’s decent value compared to other big front-drivers, but the aging Hyundai Azera tops out at only $29,570. Admittedly, most of the competition is due for replacement soon too. The Buick Lucerne doesn’t really attract since it’s one of GM’s oldest platforms and is thoroughly outclassed. A high-end Ford Taurus has the space, but doesn’t cosset as well as the Toyota. A couple rear-wheel-drive options include the excellent Hyundai Genesis and new Chrysler 300, both in V6 form. Those would be similarly priced, and offer some color compared to the staid Toyota.

THE VERDICT

But the Avalon really is as close to a Lexus as you can get without paying the price premium for the little “L” badge. In fact, it’s more a Lexus than some current cars, like the HS 250 hybrid sedan or upcoming CT 200 hatchback. It’s smooth, quiet and unassuming, and perfectly positioned to capture Toyota customers who’ve grown up with the brand and grown out of a Camry.

Dynojet Toyota Avensis BTTC Racer to get 2.0-liter Turbo Engine with 300HP

The latest news to come out of Toyota's BTCC camp is that Dynojet Race Team’s Avensis racer will have under its hood a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-banger adapted from one of the Japanese firm's road-going range. The engine is currently under Toyota GB-funded development at the Northamptonshire laboratories of engineering consultancy X CTech. It will feature a turbocharger as well as a number of internal revisions, which will all help boost output from around 140bhp in road specification to 300bhp or more.

X CTech said it believes the racing car powerplant will be one of the lightest and most powerful engines on the grid of the British Touring Car Championship.

“The Avensis has been designed to the ‘Next Generation Touring Car’ rules, which means we could have opted for the stock TOCA engine, however we were enormously impressed by the plans put forward by X CTech R and felt that this was the right way for us to go, not least because it means our Avensis will be 100 per cent Toyota,” said Dynojet Race Team chief Frank Wrathall Snr.

The Dynojet Race Team’s Avensis BTCC car will be raced this season by Frank Wrathall Jnr. The opening rounds of the British Touring Car Championship are scheduled for 3 April at Brands Hatch, Kent.

This 1980 Toyota Corolla TE71 Packs a Big-Block 454 / 7.4-liter Chevy V8

Let us introduce you to our find of the day; a 1980 Toyota Corolla TE71 Coupe retrofitted with a big brawny classic American V8 powerplant. This wolf in sheep's clothing was once powered by a small four-cylinder engine but now comes with a 454 cubic inch (equal to 7.4-liters) big block Chevrolet V8 powerhouse that drives the wheels through GM's Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission.

According to the eBay seller, "with 13 inch tires it only goes about 65 [we'll assume he's talking about mph here] at 4000 rpms, but it gets there in about 4 seconds" and while driveable, the car needs some TLC to be road-worthy. The current bid on eBay is $3,251 but the reserve has not been met yet.

Tesla to Extend its Lineup with an All-Electric SUV by 2014

Lately, the folks over at Tesla have been very busy developing the upcoming Model S sedan and, together with Toyota, the all-electric version of the RAV4 compact SUV. But there’s more, as according to an LA Times report, the California-based automaker is also working on a small SUV of its own, currently named Model X.

Scheduled to go on sale by 2014, the new crossover model is said to offer more cabin space compared to similarly sized SUVs thanks to the electric powertrain, which, unlike an internal combustion engine and conventional transmission, needs less space.

Tesla hasn’t released any other information, but it’s quite possible that the Model X will follow in the footsteps of the Roadster and Model S. That means customers can expect good handling characteristics, multiple battery pack options to suit specific autonomy needs and a versatile interior. Last but not least, Tesla’s SUV should also qualify for some kind of federal tax credit.

Toyota UK Introduces Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser V8 60th Anniversary Models

To celebrate the Land Cruiser's 60th anniversary, Toyota's UK arm has announced two special edition models based on the standard five-door Land Cruiser and the flagship Land Cruiser V8. Both off-roaders come with discrete exterior appointments and extra equipment as standard including leather upholstery, 18-inch alloy wheels, premium audio system and special 60th Anniversary badges and carpet mats.

Additionally, the Land Cruiser’s 3.0-liter D-4D diesel engine has been revised for the 2011MY and is now capable of 188bhp (+11bhp) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque (+10 Nm/+7 lb-ft), while achieving the same fuel economy. A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is also available, making the oil-burning powerplant Euro 5 compliant.

The base price for the Land Cruiser 60th Anniversary is £49,950, while the Land Cruiser V8 60th Anniversary carries a price sticker of £61,950. The anniversary models are available now.

Last but not least, Toyota is once again selling a three-door version of the Land Cruiser, available in a single trim level (LC3) and with a manual transmission only. The standard equipment list includes 17-inch alloy wheels, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Active Traction Control (A-TRC), climate control, smart entry and start system, Bluetooth, six-speaker audio system and front fog lamps. The “on the road” price is £30,395.

The Land Cruiser’s history began in 1951, when Toyota launched the truck-derived BJ, initially for military service. It was the first vehicle to reach the sixth hill station on Mount Fuji, located at an altitude of 2,500 meters. Impressed by its off-road capabilities, the Japanese police added it to its fleet, practically jumpstarting the model’s long-term success.

The Land Cruiser nameplate was first used in 1954, as a generic designation for the new Type 25 BJ, while the forerunner of the Land Cruiser V8 was the 1966 Land Cruiser Station Wagon, introduced in the U.S. as more refined version of the standard model.
